Thông Điệp Vu Lan 2026 – Phật Lịch 2571

Nam Mô Bổn Sư Thích Ca Mâu Ni Phật
Kính lễ chư Tôn Giáo Phẩm, chư Tôn Đức Tăng Ni,
Kính thưa quí Thiện Nam Tín Nữ, Gia Đình Phật Tử,

Mùa Vu Lan là dịp chúng ta cùng nghiền ngẫm những giá trị cốt lỗi về báo hiếu giữa Phật Giáo,  truyền thống Việt và cách suy nghĩ của người Mỹ. Ắt hẳn có sự khác biệt  trong nghĩa cử báo ân của người Việt và người Hoa Kỳ. Tuy có khác về hình thức nhưng cùng chung ý niệm: Một tấm lòng. Tấm lòng đó, trong Phật giáo gọi là gốc rễ của lòng Từ. Tấm lòng đó là tình thương của mẹ cha đối với con cái và ngược lại.

Người con Mỹ được dạy gì về tấm lòng này. Rằng, thương cha mẹ thì hãy nỗ lực tự lập và đừng làm phiền cha mẹ khi mình qua tuổi mười tám. Do vậy, con em chúng ta không ở chung với cha mẹ và không ỷ vào sự giúp đỡ từ cha mẹ. Ngược lại, cha mẹ cũng không ngồi đó chờ lúc mình già con cái phải nuôi lại. Ân nghĩa ở đây được đặt ra là, hãy luôn ghi nhớ công ơn sanh thành dưỡng dục của cha mẹ, nhưng cũng phải biết tự xây dựng cuộc sống của riêng mình để không quá lệ thuộc nhau và cần tôn trọng nhau. Cộng đồng Việt chúng ta với bề dày có mặt trên đất nước này hơn nửa thế kỷ chắc cũng đã quen dần lối suy nghĩ và nếp văn hóa này.

Người Việt ở Hoa Kỳ, không phải ai cũng có cha mẹ và người thân nơi đất nước này. Nếu chúng ta không có được duyên may đó thì trong mùa Lễ Vu Lan chúng ta thêm một lần nữa thệ nguyện, có cuộc sống thịnh vượng, thành công và hữu ích. Nếu chúng ta được sáng, được thành đạt thì mẹ cha chúng ta cũng mãn nguyện cho dù họ ở đâu hay bên kia bán cầu. Sự thành đạt của chúng ta trên đất nước này cũng là cách trả một phần ân nghĩa nào đó đối với mẹ cha, bỡi lẽ, tại sao mình đến quê hương này, trong đó có ước mơ của cha mẹ cho con mình đến đây để có được một cơ hội tốt hơn.

Những năm gần đây, Phật giáo Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ có những thay đổi để sinh tồn và phát triển trên quê hương thương yêu này. Chúng ta có nhiều Phật sự gắn bó nhau hơn trong Giáo Hội. Trong đó có Phật Đản chung, Khóa Tu Học Phật Pháp Bắc Mỹ, An Cư  Kiết Hạ và Kiết Đông của Giáo Hội. Đất nước Hoa Kỳ bao la quá, nếu không có dịp sinh hoạt chung của Giáo Hội thì chúng ta rất ít khi được gặp nhau. Trước nhiều thách đố của người đệ tử Phật nơi vùng đất mới, sự hội tụ để nuôi dưỡng và trợ lực là điều cần thiết. Giáo Hội mời gọi tất cả Tăng Ni và Phật tử hãy cùng đến để thắp sáng con đường phía trước của Phật giáo Việt nam.   

Mùa Vu Lan năm nay, tôi xin thay mặt Giáo Hội khánh tuế chư Tăng Ni thêm một tuổi hạ. Thêm năng lực phước trí để Phật Giáo Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ được rực sáng hơn. Tôi xin cầu chúc quí Thiện nam Tín nữ và gia đình được cát tường trong mùa lễ.

Namo Shakyamuni Buddha

With profound reverence, I pay homage to the Most Venerable and Venerable Members of the Sangha, and respectfully extend my greetings to all Buddhist devotees and members of the Buddhist Youth Family,

The sacred season of Vu Lan invites us to reflect upon the timeless virtues of filial piety, gratitude, and loving-kindness — values deeply rooted in Buddhism and Vietnamese tradition, and meaningfully expressed within American culture as well.

Although Vietnamese and American families may express gratitude toward their parents in different ways, the essence remains the same: a sincere and loving heart. In Buddhism, this heart is the foundation of compassion—the love of parents for their children, and the gratitude and respect of children toward their parents.

In American culture, children are often encouraged to become independent upon reaching the age of eighteen, while parents generally do not expect their children to support them later in life. Yet independence does not diminish gratitude. True filial devotion also means remembering the sacrifices and kindness of our parents, while living responsibly, with dignity and mutual respect.

For many Vietnamese living in the United States, parents and loved ones may be separated from us by great distances. During Vu Lan, we renew our aspiration to live a virtuous, meaningful, and successful life. Our accomplishments and contributions in this country can become a source of joy and peace for our parents, wherever they may be. In this way, our lives become one expression of gratitude for the love, sacrifices, and hopes our parents have entrusted to us.

In recent years, Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States has continued to strengthen through greater unity and shared activities of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in America, including the Joint Buddha’s Birthday Celebration, the North American Buddhist Dharma Study Retreat, and the annual Summer and Winter Retreats.

Because our communities are separated by the vast distances of this country, coming together is essential. Through fellowship, mutual support, and shared practice, we can nourish one another and preserve the light of the Buddha Dharma for future generations. The Congregation therefore calls upon all monastics and Buddhist devotees to unite our hearts and efforts, so that Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States may continue to flourish and shine brightly.

On this sacred occasion of Vu Lan, on behalf of the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation, I respectfully extend my heartfelt blessings to all members of the Sangha as they complete another year of monastic practice. May you be blessed with ever-greater merit, wisdom, compassion, and spiritual strength, so that Vietnamese Buddhism in the United States may continue to flourish, bringing the light of the Buddha Dharma to our communities and to generations yet to come. To all Buddhist devotees and their families, may this Vu Lan season bring peace, happiness, prosperity, and abundant blessings.

May we always remember the kindness of our parents, cherish the bonds of gratitude, and carry the light of compassion wherever we go.
